The Droid Tri-Fighter was a type of advanced droid starfighter used by Separatist forces during the Clone Wars era. The Tri-fighter excelled in dogfights due to its agility and small stature. Tri-Fighters were the most deadly Droid Fighters in the galaxy, so Clone Troopers were worried when they fought them.
The Tri-Fighter was controlled by a single integrated cybernetic brain housed in the main "ball" portion of the fighter. Surrounding this command portion were three vertical beams each of which was equipped with a blaster cannon. These cannons were mounted on rails allowing them to change positions if needed while acquiring targets. A single large cannon was placed in front of the spherical unit. The fighter's propulsion was handled by three engines in the back which provided superior maneuvering capability.
Battle of Sullust
Droid Tri-Fighters were first seen in action during the Battle of Sullust. Asajj Ventress lead her Droid Tri-Fighter squadron against many Republic starfighters. Ventress later used her Tri-Fighters against the Resolute and it was destroyed. When Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi showed up in their starfighters, Ventress and the Droid Tri-Fighters shot them. Obi-Wan and Anakin split up and went their separate ways. Ventress followed Obi-Wan while the 6 Droid Tri-Fighers followed Anakin. While they were chasing Anakin, they passed a Recusant-class Light Destroyer. 3 of the Droid Tri-Fighters followed Anakin while the other 3 went on the other side of the Recusant. Aankin later on tricked the Droid Tri-Fighters after he saw the other 3 on the other side of the Recusant. Anakin made both Tri-Fighter groups crash into each other as he left to find Obi-Wan and Ventress.
