The Zillo Beast was a large, semi-sentient being found on Malastare. Thousands of years before the Clone Wars, the beasts killed the now-dominant species, the Dugs, by either eating or crushing them. However, when the Dugs started extracting oil from their planet, the Zillo Beasts were killed off by the poisonous fumes, and thought to be extinct. Doge Urus said that a prophecy existed, that the killer beasts would return someday. This somber premonition came true after the last surviving member was awoken by the Electro-Proton bomb.

The Republic captured the beast and brought to Coruscant for study, hoping to adapt its impervious scales for their clone trooper armor. It soon escaped and rampaged across Galactic City, attempting to get to Supreme Chancellor Palpatine. Though the beast was killed, Palpatine ordered it to be cloned, a project which would be carried out by the Galactic Empire at a secret cloning site on Wayland.
