Qui-Gon Jinn was a Jedi Master active in the decades preceding the Clone Wars.

Biography[]

Originally the Padawan learner of then Jedi Master Dooku, Qui-Gon passed his trials of knighthood and eventually took his apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi. Noted as a wise individual with a talent for negotiation, Jinn and his Padawan went to the planet Naboo to act as ambassadors for the Republic to the Trade Federation, who become increasingly indignant over various taxation policies. The two Jedi were subsequently swept up into the battle that followed, in which Jinn was later killed by the Sith warrior Darth Maul.

Before his death, he found Anakin Skywalker in Tatooine, recognized him as the Chosen One, and pleaded with his apprentice to train him, which the latter agreed to do his wishes. Qui-Gon's reports of encountering a Sith Lord were widely refuted by the Jedi Council. He nonetheless endeavored to take young Skywalker as his padawan once his original student Kenobi had passed his trials. Before departing for Naboo, Qui-Gon spoke with his old master Dooku one final time, who believed his claims and warned him not to underestimate the Sith.

Jinn's spirit appears before Kenobi on Mortis.

Qui-Gon's Force ghost appeared to Obi-Wan on the planet Mortis, where he guided Obi-Wan and Anakin Skywalker through the Force-wielders' interest in The Chosen One. He warned Obi-Wan that Mortis would either reveal to Anakin that he was the Chosen One, or be a dangerous place for his power. He later appeared to Anakin to guide him on his way to the Well of the Dark Side to stop the Son.

Voices[]

"Such power... Any hope that the Jedi can prevail, is there?"
"There is always hope, my friend, though it often comes in forms not looked for. The key is knowing how to see it and seizing that opportunity. I have been tasked with guiding you forward.
"
―Yoda speaks with Qui-Gon's spirit on Dagobah[src]

Yoda heard Qui-Gon Jinn's voice while meditating, speaking to him through the Living Force. While Yoda did not believe it at first, he soon realized that his old friend was somehow communicating with him. The Jedi Council was skeptical when Yoda shared this, believing it was impossible for anyone to retain their identity after death. Nonetheless, they helped Yoda attempt to commune with him by placing him in a sensory depravation chamber, bringing Yoda as close to death as possible. During the procedure, Yoda only heard Qui-Gon urging him against this method and telling him that the only way he would find answers were to come to the planet Dagobah alone.

Yoda did as he was told and went to Dagobah, where he could once again speak to his old friend. Qui-Gon told him this planet was one of the purest places in the galaxy, the power through which he could speak to Yoda. He led him to a cave strong with the Dark Side to show him a vision of the Jedi's destruction. Qui-Gon warned of a coming darkness that had already taken root in the Jedi and its power grew each day the Clone Wars raged. Hope for the future laid in Yoda's ability to learn to commune with the living after death. Qui-Gon had been tasked with guiding Yoda on that path.
