A thermal detonator

The Thermal Detonator was a widely popular type of explosive device that was used by both the Droid Army and the Grand Army of the Republic during the Clone Wars. These detonators were often spherical devices that triggered an intense explosion, capable of taking out a large group of enemies at once, or taking down small vehicles such as Dwarf Spider Droids or AT-RTs. They were small, compact, and easy to carry, making them very useful in battle.

The thermal detonator was terms of technology was relatively simple, the device was filled with a volatile substance which upon activation would be ignited by a current of energy that would cause a tremendous blast wave. The outer casing of the detonator was often made of a type of metallic alloy that once sufficiently heated would also explode thus adding to the energy of the blast wave. The amount of fuel contained in the device would vary in concentration and quantity depending on the individual unit. In addition, the majority of these explosives where capable adhering to a to object making them exceedingly useful as a form of sabotage or trap. Thermal detonators could also be fired from MH-8s, which enabled clones to launch them further, without having to expose themselves to enemy fire.

Users

Users of the thermal detonator included clone troopers, Separatist Battle droids, Bounty Hunters, and Pirates. Thermal detonators were used as primarily for demolition as Ahsoka Tano and Barriss Offee intended to do during the Second Battle of Geonosis where two were tasked with destroying a Separatist droid factory.

The Merr-Sonn Munitions Inc. V-1 thermal detonator was popular amongst clone troopers during the war.
